I had something similar on a 33 - Ok a vastly different engine, but.....
I heard a whining sound for a while, but it went away. A few hundred or
a thousand miles later, a belt broke. This was because a tensioner
seized and I am sure that the whining was the belt running over the
seized tensioner wheel - and bedding in. Belts will run for a while
without tensioners...but not for long. (the car actually still ran on
two cyclinders...!)
Has this engine got balancing shafts? If so, this drive belt and
tensioner can be a problem.
