Super Pro bushings experience.
I just installed new rear trailing arm bushings into my 86 spider. Wow what
a difference! I have been told before that the trailing arm and reaction
triangle bushings are the most overlooked items needing replacement in most
spiders that handle like wet noodles. The choice of using these Super Pro
bushings, I think, has improved on the original design, while providing a
longer lasting polyurethane in place of the rubber OEM. The install does
require some patience, down time, and probably a trusted machinist to remove
the old bushing sleeves, but the pay off is well worth it. The new bushings
provide more stability in the trailing arms by supplying a set of urethane
washers to fill in the gaps you see on the existing setup.
In removing the reaction triangle (t bar), I have noticed what I consider an
overlooked bushing. The two body to t bar coupling (carriers) as it called
in the service manual, were very worn, and the passenger side one was
disintegrated. This car is only 13 years old and well cared for! I would
like to speak to someone who has replaced these before as to the correct
process for removal. Another machine shop visit? The dealer hasn't replaced
one before. The car handles much better as is with the new bushings, but I
must replace this now that I know it's worn.
