75 Automatic question

I only have experience with old style automatic gearboxes in that the gear
change is governed by the vacuum level. And the kick down cable is only used
for kickdown (the cable is not under tension until the accelerator pedal is
depressed to max).

On an Alfa 75 automatic, how is the gear change governed? is it only through
the kick down cable? or is there something else?
