Fouled Plugs

Sounds like oil is getting into number 4 cylinder causing the plug to foul. 
 I guess racing the engine cleans the plug good enough to start firing 
again.   I have had the same thing happen to me and for the most part 
assumed the engine just got flooded.  Just thought part of the Italian tune 
up method to run the motor hard and everything starts to run good again.
