No brake lights

Hello.  The brake lights on my '91 164 base went out last Sunday after 
returning from a long downhill drive (I used mostly second gear to slow 
down), and I got a replacement switch from the local parts dealer.  I 
installed it today, but it does the same as the original switch.  The brake 
lights are good, and the fuse is good.  Any ideas on what the problem might 
be?  I get two lights on the instrument panel, the "brake" light and the 
"Stop" light.
