more hot air

manifold on the same side as the filter I am sure any gain in HP is lost
from
the hot air being sucked in. The only gain I think would be while traveling
at a good rate of speed, because the filter is right in front of the hole
where the air comes in to the original air box, so there might be a slight
ram
effect...

I am presently experimenting with K&N Quadraflows vs. my stock SPICA airbox.
I have been checking underhood temperatures with a remote thermometer, find
that with an ambient temp of about 80F, my underhood temp in Portland runs
135-150F+ on either side of my motor, but higher than the thermometer will
measure on the header side of the master cylinders. I ran 2.5" ducting
through the radiator bulkhead to the K&Ns, and found much less improvement
than I would've thought; even at 70mph, the temp in the vicinity of the K&Ns
didn't dip below 130F. But mercy, does it sound great.

Inside the SPICA intake, temps ran very close to ambient with any sort of
car movement, tho it heatsoaked and climbed quickly, sitting in traffic. 50
degrees F difference between the two filtering systems probably means a
measurable performance difference; I plan to do back to back, one gear
acceleration tests to see if I can determine what it might be with variables
minimized.
