1971 GT 105 with reverse gear problems...

As this is a '71, you might have the later 5th-to-reverse lockout
mechanism (if you don't have to push the knob down to get to reverse,
then you have this system). My race car had a problem with the darn
thing - sometimes it would refuse to go into fifth, sometimes it would
refuse to go anywhere BUT reverse from fifth (now that's really bad!).
The trip levers in the shift tower top plate were worn, and the spring
was very weak. Replacing the darned thing with a proper unit solved the
problem - after much consternation.
