Shift knob solution

Thanks to everyone (Sixto, John H, Bill Bergman, Russ Neely, and I think
a couple of others) who responded privately with solutions to the shift
knob dilemma.

As it turns out, this particular aftermarket shift knob was held on with
not one, but three Allen-keyed grub screws (or setscrews). I popped the
little plastic trim ring down the shift lever with a suitable pry bar
(the blade of a very dull pocketknife) and used a 2mm Allen key to
loosen the grub screws. The knob just lifted off the shaft.

However, as to part 2 -- the aperture in the knob I'd received as a gift
was too small to permit installation in the Alfa. I replaced the
original shifter, after orienting it a little more comfortably for my
own hand position of course. The gift-knob is now in my wife's car,
where the cross and serpent are a little out of place...

Thanks again,
