Bonneville Update #3

Alfisti -

Good news and bad news.....

First the good news: Pre-Speed Week inspections by officials from the
Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) indicate that the Salt Flats
have not looked this good in YEARS! Yeah!!! Apparently, as a result of a
massive salt pumping project (to replenish salt that had been harvested for
decades), the salt is much thicker and the course has much more area.
Because of limited space in previous years and safety being a major concern,
there were excruciating delays between runs. SCTA's goal this year is "to
minimize the time you spend sitting in line to run". I like the sound of
that....

The bad news: The blown 2.0 litre is not putting out. Its most recent visit
to the dyno was dismal. Even with a blower pulley spinning the blower at
twice engine rpm, the boost was only 7-8 lbs with HP well below 200. Even
with adjustments to cam timing, we can't avoid the fact that we need a bigger
blower. If we consider that the blown 1470 did not obtain peak HP until we
installed a supercharger designed for a 3.0 to 5.0 litre, then the blown 2.0
must require a supercharger designed for a small block Chevy!! Our
suspicions were confirmed when a supercharger specialist informed us that the
Eaton (Roots-type) were horribly inefficient. Is to too late to swap to a
PowerDyne (centfrifugal type)? 8 days to go.....

Dick Kreines, "Bonnie's" benevolent owner, is learning the hard way that to
make a small fortune in car racing, you first have to start with a large
fortune.
