Giulietta charging system modifications
Lewis,
The Lucas system is really not much worse than the Bosch, DC generating
system. Which is to say that the Bosch isn't much better than the Lucas!
My opinions:
1) theoretically, positive earth is superior to negative ground. The
overwhelming deficiencies in available technology make this a moot point.
Unless you use the stock Lucas equipment, convert to negative ground.
2) The control boxes used for positive earth systems are not happy when used
on negative ground systems. They will have a short and miserable life. The
generators do not seem to care (if polarized correctly).
3) DC generators are inherently inferior to AC generators. If you are going
to the expense and trouble of modifying the system for efficiency, put an
alternator on it! Nippon-Denso makes a pretty little unit that is a willing
slave. Yes, the halogen lights will bright, at last. Double the output,
half the problems. Throw down the cash, and do it.
4) Most old cars have bad wiring. Do yourself a favor and make sure the
battery is really connected to "ground." That rusty bolt in the trunk is
usually a poor substitute. If you are serious about this, make the existing
wire from the battery to the starter a ground cable. With an eyelet crimped
(auto electric shop) and soldered on each end, it will go from the new
battery cut off switch, on the negative post, to a starter mounting bolt on
the bellhousing. An auxiliary ground strap goes to the stock bolt on the
trunk floor. Double-ought (00) multi-stranded welding wire may be used for
the new positive cable. The same crimping and soldering procedure will
secure an eyelet on the starter end and a bronze positive battery terminal on
the other. Say good-bye to voltage drop problems. Wait until you hear the
starter! Make sure you have a good wire, with no resistance, from the
alternator to the starter.
You will still be heckled -- certainly for the reversible changes you have
made to your car. When your fellow, vintage car friends complain that you
have your brights on, you can politely tell them. "Sorry, old chap, but those
ARE my dipped beams."
