Hi,

Mr. checkbook mechanic is tackling a few things on his own. Here is the
chance to "let me have it." I'm replacing the lights under my trunk lid
on an '89 spider. That looks straight forward, and I'm sure I'll have
few problems. But I'm curious about the gearshift boot. I'm replacing
this, and while sitting at a stoplight, I was feeling around the outer
edge thru the vinyl, and could not detect any fasteners. Does this ring
or whatever simply pry out? Can I do this without removing the center
console? Seemed like a "lock" when I thought about it and purchased just
the boot, not the other part. I figured I could just use the old ring
again. I'm sure someone has figured this out and done it themselves. My
first request for mechanical help. I guess I can't really call replacing
the boot mechanical.

Far be it from me to cheat my mechanic out of his hourly, but .....just
this once!!
