Hate to disillusion you Brian. Much as we'd like to think that Mr Alfa
thought of us power-hungry leadfoots when designing the air filter housing,
the round stub is really the attachment for a heated-air hose. The other
end of the hose attaches to a similar stub on a flat plate which is bolted
to the induction side engine mount (just below the carburettors) and draws
heated air from around the engine block into the induction tract.
Presumably one sets the air intake to this position for winter, where
people have real winters - Alaska? Sweden? Canada?

Just about the first two things I do are to: 1. detach the choke cable from
the carbs, and 2. take off that warm air hose which is definitely not
needed in our climate. The hose is a nuisance when putting the air filter
assembly on I find.

BTW our server has had problems so if I haven't replied to a message its
probably because I haven't received it.

Les back in Wellington after conferencing and climbing volcanoes - what a
buzz!
