fuel pump

I need to replace the main fuel pump on my Alfa spider grad. My son said
that he can replace the fuel pump with another pump as long as the wiring
is the same. Is this true? He claims that there is a universal fuel pump
that will work for almost all vehicles. He used it in his old truck that
had a manual fuel pump and he wired in an electric pump. Will this other
pump work on an Alfa? Thanks
