'74 Spider question

Greetings Digeters,

I am still sorting out my 74 spider. I have a question
about something on my inner fender. It is a round pot
looking eletrical part. It has a wire that goes to the
Disty and the a wire that goes to the coil. I have a
blue coil so I have no external resistor. I have no
idea what this thing does or even if it is a source of
a problem. I'd like to take it out if it is not
needed. Anyone have any ideas? It is silver and looks
like a volume pot.

Otherwise the car is coming along nicely. I am getting
the body panels I want to wled in place and am fixing
the floor. I want it painted and running before the AR
trip this fall.
