Help request-aligning doors '88 Spider

I removed my passenger door to replace a bent hinge (long story).  Neither 
the door or door frame is damaged.  Does anyone have any practical hints to 
help me hang the door so that it opens and closes in correct alignment with 
the frame.  I was thinking of shimming the door with wooden wedges until it 
looks right, and then tightening the hinge bolts.  It appears the door can be 
adjusted both inside the door and where the hinges connect in the auto's body 
itself.  Thanks in advance.
