Is this valve job OK?

Digesters,

I need advice on a rebuilt 2000 cylinder head that was delivered to me.
The head was done on an exchange basis, and as I was working on it (with
the combustion chambers facing up under bright lights), noticed that I
could see "daylight" through the valve ports. The cams were not installed.
To investigate further, I layed a 24" shop light over the combustion
chambers then covered it with a towel. As I looked up both intake and
exhaust ports, I could literally see very thin rings of light around every
one of the valves at the sealing surface with the valve seat!! Some valves
more than others, but light through all 8 valves nonetheless. This would
not pass the factory seal test!

I checked two other (used) heads and could not duplicate this condition.
This reconditioned head has new valves and valve seats, and was supposed to
have a "multi-angle valve job". Everything is very clean.

Is this a condition that is characteristic of multi-angle valve jobs? My
understanding is that this type of valve cut has a very narrow sealing
surface, but these valves cannot possible be sealing if I can see light
through the sealing surface - right?

The only other explanation is that perhaps the valve job was done using a
torque plate to simulate the torqued stresses that will result when the
head is attached to the block, and that these gaps will disappear after
installation. But this is my conjecture. And that is a heck of a lot of
labor if I'm wrong...can any of you experts verify?

I removed an intake valve to check to see if there was grit on one of the
valves or seat surfaces. I noticed the valves were only lubricated with
light oil, not assembly lube. Is that the proper lube for breaking in
valves and manganese-bronze valve guides? Also, there was no evidence that
the valves had been lapped to the seats. The valve had a single cut and
the valve seat had two cuts on the seat (multi-angle?).

Finally the head had a spark plug thread insert - copper color. Any
experience from the audience on the durability of this repair?

I'm going to either have to reject this head (and not drive the grey
berlina to the convention) or use as is - and at this point I'm
uncomfortable that what I have is correct. If I keep it the only thing I
could really do is to lap in the valves, and I'm not sure if this will take
off enough material to remedy the apparent seat-valve gaps. Help!
Suggestions and opinions welcome!
