Radio troubles

I'm having a similar sort of trouble with the OE Clarion radio in my '86
GTV-6.  Lots of static, the sound jumping around from speaker to speaker.
I can make it change to some other sort of poor quality sound by pushing or
thumping on the plastic casing.  I've suspected it's a short or bad
connection somewhere behind the radio, but I haven't had time to deal with
it because the AFM is also acting up (ID'd by process of elimination) and
I've had to spend all my Alfa time dealing with that.
