Re: alfa-digest V7 #770 - Clutch Bleading

A couple of comments of clutch bleeding. On the Alfetta, jack up the
right side of the car as high as you can. That makes the bleed screw less on
the bottom and helps get air out of the long run of hose from the master to
the slave.
On any Alfa with a slave, I bleed the slave under the car. Open the
bleed screw, push the clutch rod into the slave forcing fluid out. Close the
screw and allow the spring to fill the slave cylinder with fluid. Repeat
several times. This is probably much like using the mighty vac or other
bleeding system, but without buying the tool. Pumping the pedal may not work
on an empty, newly rebuilt system. There is so much air and so little fluid,
things do not move around the way they are supposed to.
Cracking the connection at the master cylinder works for both clutch
and brakes. It is not even necessary to pump the pedal. Just cracking the
fitting and rapping on the master cylinder with a wrench will often make the
air bubble go away. This is especially true if you have replaced just the
master cylinder without opening the rest of the system.
