Spider Noses

I want to follow on the heels of Karl Rickert's question about Spider
nose interchangeability.

While looking at the '88 that I didn't buy and the '74 that I did, it
seemed that the noses were slightly different.  At the time, I put it
down to the fact that the '88 has larger bumpers and the '74 has the
Carello light covers, but the more I look -- or should that be gaze
longingly at, while sighing over a glass of celebratory champagne -- at
the front of my '74, the more I'm convinced there's a slight difference
in the sheet metal of the nose cone.

Is it just the combination of the infatuation of a new romance aided by
liberal applications (after the keys were put up for the night, of
course) of the bubbly, or was the nose of the Spider changed, and if so
when?
