If you can't find the proper plugs, try rubber stoppers (corks).  How far
it is back you don't say -- stop and check frequently.  You know, your
wrench sounds pretty cooperative -- and they are probably in his shop
somewhere.....

If it <was> smoking, I'd say driving it back (with oil) is not likely to
make it any worse.  But it is time for you guys to locate another at a
salvage yard.  The whine will probably never go away.
