This is where you made your mistake. You should have tried to get an
estimate on the shipping. Australia is a long way from anywhere, and given
you're trying to send a manifold (which probably weighs a fair bit) the
obvious answer would be that the cost would be a lot. Is it possible to send
it via normal Mail? Why UPS? I assume that UPS is much like FedEx and
charges like a wounded bull if you want something outside of the US of A.
What would it cost to send via normal US Post?

Again, that's something that should be considered first, before any
transaction occurs. Figure out how much it all costs FIRST, then start
buying the parts to send. 
It's very easy for me to say this now, after the transaction (or lack of
one) has occurred, but we're talking about dealing with overseas currencies,
exchange rates, international shipping etc etc, and it's not something that
should be taken lightly.
I think both parties have learnt something from this experience, and I hope
it doesn't put others on the Digest off doing business with other Digest
members.
