Nothing happens. You just get a renewal notice and you tell de DMV that y=

want to not operate the vehicle, pay the 10 bucks, and so on.

"What happens when (if) I want to put back on the road"

You just go to the DMV and register the vehicle for "street use" or such,
pay the license and drive!
