Syntetic Oil

I just wanted to share some of my non Alfa experiences regarding a
Synthetic oil. Since my non alfa cars are both supercharged and high
mileage I was concern about quality of oil.

So far the best result was Amsoil 20W50. In a stock '91 VW Corrado G60
it dropped oil temperature for more than 20 deg. F compared to Mobil 1
20W50. Due to the location (South Florida) oil temps with "harder"
driving are in 212 to 260F range and this drop in temperature was more
than welcome. For the '90 VW Corrado G60 I remain using a "dyno" oil -
for "regular" driving oil of choice is non multigrade Valvoline Racing
50 and for autocross or driving schools 60. I was hesitant to switch to
synthetic since engine and supercharger have over 155K miles.

Regarding a oil residue and "flush" before changing to synthetic - it is
a good idea to add a 1/2q of ATF (automatic transmission fluid) to
already warm engine and let it idle for 30 minutes. DO NOT DRIVE A CAR!
ATF is full of detergents and it will flush whole engine very well. This
will even work sometimes with "sticking" or loud hyd. valve lifters.
Dump the old oil and you can "safely" switch to synthetic oil of choice.

90 GTV 2.5 is a new addition to the "family". I'm planning to switch to
Amsoil on next oil change.
