Re: alfa-digest V7 #682 - Synthetic

It might be nice to know what kind of Alfa you have. On the 105/115
series, I suggest dropping the lower half of the bat wing oil pan to get all
the crud out of the bottom. On all four cylinders, I recommend removing the
valve cover and using a turkey baster to suck out the half quart of dirty oil
from the cam galleys. In fact, I do that every other oil change.
On the Milano, there is not much residual oil in the engine or under
the valve covers, so just change it. I know nothing of the 164.
To answer your question, I doubt there is any problem. Castrol sells
a blend of half regular oil and half synthetic. So I conclude they are
compatible.

 Subject: Synthetic reprocutions?

 Hello all,
I am going to switch from Castrol GTX to a synthetic. My question to the
digest is this: Because it is nearly impossible to drain all the "regular"
oil out of the motor, is it harmful to add the synthetic? Also, will the
remnants of the previous oil prevent the synthetic from properly bonding to
the metal in the motor? Any ideas or thoughts to this matter? The car has 64
thousand miles on it if that makes any difference to the equation....

 Thanks for your thoughts,
 Todd
