Strange Sound from Milano

All,

I have an '87 Milano Platinum with 78k miles on it.

I the last hundred miles or so, there's been a whirring 
sound coming from the back-end, (on the transaxle).

It's most noticable when you get going from a dead stop, and
it sorta whirrs up to when I shift and then it goes away, (reminds 
me when my chopper blade would spool up back in my flying days).

However, it also does it when I take my foot off the accelerator
in any gear, (when I'm de-celerating without my brakes) but it's
not as noticable.

Any help appreciated.
