GTV6 steering rack

A number of things before you take anything apart --

The bolts mounting the rack can get loose (apparently this happens a lot
with the Milano).

There can be play in the serrated joints, or the U-joints.

Supposedly, the tightness of the pinion in the rack is set by a shim at
the bottom.

You need two people -- one to turn the wheel lightly, the other to search
for the point of play.

Something I have been meaning to mention -- with talk of changing racks,
or working on the rubber coupling, the lower serrated joint will be
apart. This junction is in the engine compartment, down where plenty of
water and salt splash -- it can rust. The serrations are fine. Chunks of
rust can get between in changing, and make it only <appear> that the
cinch-bolt has locked the serrations together -- if so, when that rust
powders, it is awkward when you turn the wheel and nothing happens (for a
moment....)
