I did this to my spider last year and it does feel like a new car.

4 new oe shocks ~ 240
4 new oe springs~ 140
misc balljoints
 +tie rods      ~ 120

so you are looking at about 500-600 in parts depending how much you do
and where you shop. I am very happy with the result.
