submission to the master

hello,
1. just 3 days ago i bought a 71 racing green spider with only 50k miles on
it.... it's i total pleasure to drive, but this morning i had trouble
starting it... i had to pull the choke and idle it high and it still took
about 10 tries... what can be done to improve it's dependability? (the temp
outside was a perfect 75 degrees)

2. my fuel guage is dead... what should i do?
