Quite sure, yes. The edge of the piston has a cut-out, so that it touches
the pad at about 3/4 of its circumference. Unless I'm very wrong, the
piston should be positioned so that this cut-out is at the top. Three of
the pistons in my calipers were sitting correctly, one had been rotated,
causing excessive wear at the top of the pad (i.e. the leading edge when
the car was going forwards). I'm guessing that this caused the piston to
tilt in its bore, with metal to metal contact as a result. Then again, the
excessive wear at the top of the pad may have caused the pad to push
against the retaining spring. I didn't check this as I dismantled the brakes.
