Re: ignition key

Assuming that you have disconnected the battery and removed (and tagged)
the wires from the back of the ignition switch, removal of the
switch/lock module is rather straightforward.

If you look at the top of the switch lock body, you will see something
that looks like a screw head without a slot in it. This is the
"breakaway" screw that is used to attach the lock module to the steering
column and it must be removed. It's not as daunting a task as it appears!
You will need a "Dremel" tool with a cutting wheel attachment, an offset
screwdriver and a little patience. Simply use the Dremel tool to
<carefully> cut an appropriate slot in the head. Since the screw is made
of light alloy, the Dremel cuts it quite easily so be careful. Then back
the screw out using the offset. (This is where the patience is
necessary.) Once the screw is out, the entire lock module withdraws from
the steering column.

The ignition switch is held into the locking mechanism with a circlip.
Use a small pocket knife blade to remove the circlip. The ignition switch
can then be easily withdrawn from the steering lock module. Be very
careful here because there are several delicate parts inside. It might be
a good idea to use some WD40 or electronic parts cleaner to clean up the
contacts on the "cage" before reinstalling it.

Hope this helps.

Would anyone have advice on how to remove the ignition key mechanism on
the steering column of a 1974 spider parts car? I removed the shroud,
but am at a loss as to how to proceed. I want to transfer the entire
key mechanism to another spider, if possible. Thanks. M. Williams"
