Origin of term "Spider"

So what does Spider actually mean or refer to?

I have seen some recent concept cars from the big American manufacturers
being called Spiders.  Toyota has the MR-Spider.  Ferrari Spider.  Fiat
Spider.

Porsche and VW use cabriolet.

What about the term roadster?  BMW has Z3.  Honda is about to unveil their
SC2000 roadster.

I am confused.

How about hot-rod?
