steering box adjustment

I've got the worm&screw steering box in my 89 spider. How do I know when
tight is too tight?  If the car's up on jacks and the steering doesn't bind,
is this good enough?  Or is there a sight gauge or some other way to tell?
I adjusted mine to get the slack out and (of course) I want to make sure
it's not too tight.  The box is still in the car, hopefully there's a way to
tell without pulling it out?
