Duettos - a finer definition

Robin Boyar's take on the Duetto name question is - as I understand it -
correct.

I have what from experience may well be a controversial variation on this
question.

The name "Duetto" was not used in any of the factory literature as a result
of the litigation referred to by Robin ( conflict with a gum manufacturer
of all things ) However, it was used in-factory while this use question
was being sorted out; i.e., as far as Alfa was concerned, the 1600 Veloce
Spider was a Duetto.

By 1967 the issue was abandoned by Alfa Romeo as well as the name Duetto.
And so, while I accept "Duetto" as the unpublished factory name for the
1600 and do not believe that it is suitable for the 1750, in point of fact,
I personally recognize *only* the '66 as a Duetto. I have encountered no
source that takes my view (and none that contradicts it) and so have never
tried to push the idea.

I do wish, however, that folks would refrain from calling the 1750s
Duettos. Unfortunately, I expect that my wish is as effective as wishes
have always been.

In any case it is far far far less important a misnomer than having my
Duetto called an MG by an admiring dilettante.

As I indicated above, it does bother me to have the 1750 called a Duetto.
I would be very interested to know if this bother is shared by others.

I wonder too how the gum would have sold had they allowed Alfa Romeo the name.
