164 Radio

John wrote: Ive just taken ownership of a '91 164l. The car is perfect so my

recall a thread on replacing this unit. If anybody has any information on
how best to do this I would greatly appreciate it. The local radio place
rekons that being a Chrysler one it has its own amp and wiring. They
estimated a days work.
If it is a Chrysler unit can I upgrade to one with a CD player and have no
installation issues. How best can I remove the trim to see how the radio is
anchored to the car?

The 164 radio is indeed a stock Chrysler unit (Think last generation
minivan). I have seen it replaced with a more recent Chrysler unit with a CD
player in place of the cassette. I replaced mine with a Pioneer DEH-45H CD
player designed as a direct replacement for Chyrslers with the oversized
radio opening. The Crutchfield folks have a direct wiring adapter for a few
dollars that was easy to use. The original radio is attached from the rear
by two machine screws to a metal L bracket that requires a little patience
to get at. The Pioneer radio is too shallow to reach the L bracket, but sits
in place comfortably. The hardest part of the install was getting the tunnel
carpet piece back in place.
