Old-style Alfa parts numbers

For any who are curious, Alfa parts numbers had a very simple logic, with
fourteen digits in groups of two or three, separated by periods. The first
three digits were the car series- 101 for Giulietta, 105 Giulia, 116 for the
transaxle cars, for the original application of the part. The next two digits
were the specific model for the original application. The next two were the
parts group- 01 for engine block and head, up to 65 for electrics, body. Then
three digits for the specific part within the group- 010 crankshaft, 130
pistons, 200 camshafts. Then two for the execution- 00 original, 01 first
modification, 02 second modification, and so forth. Finally /00, /01, /02 for
parts of the main part- the brushes or armature for a wiper motor, for
example. It looks complicated, but a parts man could learn it in a hurry.

The system got dumped after the Fiat takeover.

Cordially,

John H.
