Just read my own message and noticed I failed to mention how we got 
through the tarry stuff. First tried cutting an scraping with 
aforementioned edged tools but finally prevailed by using a torch to 
burn the cut up area.  Once burned, the ash was reasonably easy to 
manually scrape off.
