oil filters, seven years, etc

first of all, i stand corrected on the seven year statement. i was under
them impression that the seven year commitment involved more than just
emissions equipment, not so.

second, i was not attempting to endorse any particular oil filter. people
seem to have preferences for oil filters just like they do for spark plugs
and oil. what i don't agree with are blanket statements that one brand is
better than another, unless there is some evidence to support it. even
then, i try to look at the source of that evidence, and what their financial
interest is. one magazine dumps on fram filters and another rates them #1 -
one or the other must be wrong. is fram an advertiser (or not) in either
magazine? how about the competition - do they advertise?

off-digest, somebody commented on purolator filters. curiously enough, that
is one brand i avoid, as i've seen first hand a purolator filter fail on an
alfa spider. another commented on fram failures, yet in 20 years of using
them i've never had a failure of any kind, nor have i had any engine
problems.

and no, i'm not going to start using alfa romeo oil filters on the wifes
minivan - chrysler feels that their factory filter is superior to all others
;)

fwiw,
