Unless the car has very high comp pistons, it indicates something
rather wrong. 2 litre is only 9.0:1 comp (sure it is 2 litre in a 76 GT?).
Should run fine on leaded (but avoid S***l), or even ULP. Check:
- -Cam timing.
- -Ignition timing, rev up and down to ensure it is not erratic, and that it
doesn't advance too quickly.
- -Potatoes growing on piston crowns?
Backfiring can have a number of causes, on of which is cracked
distributor cap. I hazaard aguess that erratic timing could cause
backfiring. Or something (coil, condensor, etc) breaking down under load.
