164 Cooling Questions

Greetings Alfisti,

A buddy of mine has a '93 164L, and he has the following cooling-related
questions:

(i) his engine temp gauge reads about 3/4 of full scale when the car is
warm and ambient temp is >60 degrees.  Is this what the gauge should read?

(ii) The cooling fan never remains on for more than ten seconds.  This
hasn't changed after replacing the fan/radiator temp sensor.  His mechanic
suggests that there may be an intermittent problem with the circuit.  Is
this short on-cycle for the fan normal?
