Matthew - you are correct but the lead additive prevented pre-detonation by
increasing the octane rating of the fuel. 92 octane is still 92 octane
weather it contains lead or not. The fact is that using lead was the
cheapest way for the oil companies to increase the octane level of the fuel.
Unleaded fuel of the same octane rating is not going to cause pre-ignition
problems.
