Richard and others have described the purpose of the sliding block.  As to
why this particular design was used on the Audodelta cars, there is an
oft-repeated story that it was developed by Carlo Chiti, who wouldn't hear
of replacing it with a more conventional device.

Sigh.  In 1972, you could have ordered the whole sliding block setup from
your Alfa dealer; part numbers are given in the CRH.  Most  people I know
who don't have an original sliding block are using a Panhard rod.  It may
just be a NASCAR thing, but it works well enough.
