Joe;
First you need to determine which MC you have in your Milano it is either an
ATE or Benditalia. IAP carries the rebuild kits and so does Centerline. The
cost is in the range of $17.00 to $26.00. I have rebuilt both kinds. I have
drawn up an exploded diagrams of both. The outside of the MCs looks the same,
but the internal parts and principle of operation differs.
The following applies to both types: To disassemble the inside, after you
remove the C clip, metal washer and a rubber seal you will come upon a white
plastic washer that I had to break to get it out. After that everything should
come right out. You will need to hone the cylinder. It may look fine to the
naked eye, but it will most likely be bumpy and have an uneven surface and rust
spots. After honing make sure you do not exceed the allowed clearance between
the seals and the cylinder. Before honing remove the break lines if you have
not done so already. After honing the inside should be cleaned only with break
cleaner or clean break fluid nothing else. All orifices should be clear of
honing material. The orientation of the seals inside is very important for
proper operation.
The proper honing device should be used. Cost between $10 to $20. The honing
device should reciprocate quite rapidly to get uniform surface I along the
entire cylinder. Wet the inside with clean brake fluid before honing.
Do not use mineral oils, solvents, or grease or any other fluids that will
deform and deteriorate rubber on any parts of the break system.
If you have Benditalia MC, you may need additional spacer (to replace white
plastic washer) between the rubber seal and metal washer closest to the C clip
otherwise your wheels will lock up after several miles of driving. It happened
to me. Do not get on public roads unless you are certain you could stop your
car by using the pedal. Do not count on the hand break.
Time requirements:
20 min to remove CM from car
10 min to remove reservoir and clean outside
30 min to disassemble including removing seals and drawing a diagram for
reference
30 min honing & cleaning
30 min to reassemble
20 min to install on car
40 min bleeding of break system
Total: 3:00 hours
I will look at the wiring diagram for the instrument cluster and report to you
shortly unless someone else gets it done first.
Good luck.
