Spider Tach problem

I have recently purchased my first Alfa.  An '84 Spider Veloce.  Among other
problems,  the Tach needle starts at the 12 o'clock position and runs clockwise.
(From top of the graduations into oblivion).  Is it possible that the unit is
installed 180 out?  The  PO claims he thought it was just broken and never
worried about it (?)  I would like to red line it without worrying to much about
blowing it up.

Any votes for take the dash apart and turn the thing over?
Any votes for it really is broken, get a new one?
