The best way to find out the alloy is to get a scrapped gear and have it
analysed. A foundry or analytical laboratory should be able to do it. They
use a spectrophotometer and need a small sample to do the test.

Race car gears for open wheelers in the UK and Australia are made from En36A
(close to AISI/SAE 9310). Order " aircraft quality " with particular
emphasis on a low inclusion content.

The gears will be carburised ( carburized USA speak). Shop around and find
the best heat treater you can and ask his advice. The heat treatment is
critical.

You may also want to get the finished gears shot peened.

There is an amazing amount of technical detail required to make and heat
treat gears - be careful.
