soft brake pedal in milano

happy new year all...

my '87 milano developed a soft brake pedal (still able to lock the wheels) the
other day - out of no where. i had a local garage check the system for any
leaks, glaring problems, etc... they (a non-alfa) shop sided with the master
cylinder.  i am thinking that the temperature (falling here in the northeast)
has helped to bring this on. any ideas or experience to share? thanks in
advance.

watching the snow fall here in western pennsylvania,

p.s.
for what it's worth, the rear brake pads were done a few weeks back by some
knowledgeable alfa techs who didn't mention anything...
