One important thing you can do is to get the alternator and regulator checked
at a local parts house. They can check them (the regulator should be internal
on that vintage car) when the alternator is removed from the vehicle, my local
parts houses do the check for free (marketing ploy). If the job isn't free, it
should be inexpensive. They'll tell you if those two components are good and
whether they're safe to hook up.
