slop in Milano transaxle

Now that the engine in back in my Milano, it's time to address another problem.
When cruising and making slight variations in power, I get a feeling of "slop"
in the drivetrain. With the car jacked up and moving both rear wheels
simultaneously, there is indeed quite a bit of movement before the driveshaft
engages. When it does engage, there is a clunk/rattle in the vicinity of
the clutch or very front of the transmission. Any ideas what this might be?
Time to pull the clutch?
