GTV6 tachs

I have two GTV6's, an '84 and an '86, and both tachometers are faulty in
the same way.  One only goes up to 2k and the other to 3k.

Does anyone have any advice as to whether it is usually the gauge itself
or the signal source? I don't want to buy a 2nd hand tach to find out
that wasn't the problem.
