Alfas of the time were beautifully uncynical designs when compared to
the products of the British motor industry of the same period.  And,
at least within the enthusiast press, their qualities were recognised.
The 'Sud was still being used as a benchmark by 'Car' magazine at the
beginning of the 80s (at least as far as handling/ driver satisfaction
are concerned).  See the early test of the first of the FWD Ford 
Escorts (actually outpaced the 'Sud around Car's test track).

The rest of the press may well have been telling a different story.
