Driving question

With all the talk about proper shifting, and my own efforts to turn a
1:30:00 at Monza in Grand Prix Legends, I was wondering if the race-car
folk could explain something to me:
What, exactly, is "trail-braking", what is it good for, and how is it done?
I've got some vague ideas, but when I try them I end up mowing grass on the
virtual track.
While technically not alfa-related (I'm driving a lotus in the game), I
figure this is a pretty good topic for the digest as this sounds like
something budding alfa-racers would want to know.
(Opinions from Old Rats and Grinches are especially welcome, as they may
have a better idea of how the technique was used during the time period in
question, 1967).
Thanks!
